Mark Tobey was recognized in his later years as a unique force in 20th century art, and one of the most remarkable American artists. A series of exhibitions in the last fifteen years of his life clearly demonstrated the diversity and scale of his achievement as an artist. But the background to this achievement, in terms of the artist's own outlook and beliefs, remained poorly understood. This book explores this background, which is not only of particular importance for an understanding of Tobey's work, but also of special interest for the light it throws on the significance and attraction of the Bahá’í Faith for a major modern artist.
