Mark Tobey was recognized in his later years as a unique force in 20th century art, and one of the most remarkable American artists. A series of exhibitions in the last fifteen years of his life clearly demonstrated the diversity and scale of his achievement as an artist. But the background to this achievement, in terms of the artist's own outlook and beliefs, remained poorly understood.
