Rúḥá Khánum was the third daughter of `Abdu'l-Bahá. She was born in the Prison City of 'Akká, like her other siblings.

Rúḥá Khánum married Mírzá Jalál her maternal cousin and the son of Mírzá Muhammad Hasan, the King of Martyrs ; their children were:

  • Maryam Khánum
  • Muníb
  • Zahrá Khánum
  • Ḥasan

They all took the surname Shahíd. She allowed her son Muníb Shahíd to marry the daughter of a political exile who is nephew of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. This was not a Bahá'í ceremony, but a Muslim one. Shoghí Effendí wrote in 1944: "This treacherous act of alliance with enemies of the Faith merits condemnation of entire Bahá'í world." Thefore, Rúhá Khánum along with her children were declared Covenant Breakers.
